Optical Illusions > Depth Perception > Hollow Face Illusion Hollow Face IllusionThe hollow face illusion is an altered perception of depth, happening when the observer looks directly into certain types of concave faces. The observer sees the face as if it was convex (i.e. coming towards the observer) while that is really not the case; the effect can be magnified by engineering the lighting (especially back-lighting the face). Many masks of famous personalities, including tennis players, Einstein, and dragons have been created to demonstrate the effect.
